Stage Rentals

Edgewood Studios is located within the Restored and Historic Howe Scale Works, now re-named Howe Center. The complex at one point employed over half the city of Rutland, Vermont’s residents. Now it is home to a successful and diverse mixture of businesses both retail and manufacturing, including some that use the adjacent rail yard as part of their operations. While this allows for the delivery of very large set items and supplies to the studio if required (at the lowest possible cost), and is one of the key components to Edgewood’s success as a facility, it also requires compromise at times due to the sound of train operations, which are intermittent. It is also important to note that these stages are raw industrial space and have not been formally soundproofed except where noted. These issues are greatly outweighed by the cost savings offered with the combined benefits of many of the other “in-complex” services, some listed below.

Additionally, the spaces available are flexible and what is listed below is only a partial sampling of available space. Through a special arrangement with Howe Center Ltd. there is additional warehouse/office space available within the complex in various sizes and configurations, including some exteriors. For very large set requirements we have available a substantially larger clear-span stage space available off-site (In the former Himoline Factory complex) within a few minutes drive of the Production office.

We encourage you to come take a look and let us help you find the specific space you require. This is as close to a backlot as you are going to find anywhere in New England!

Stage A is a 63’x36” space with a suspended ceiling at 10’6” which can be removed to increase height by another three feet. 1600 Amp Service. A catwalk built above the center of the stage allows access to the top of the stage. The stage is sound insulated and isolated from the production office allowing for simultaneous operation of both the offices and stage. Outfitted with Studio “In-Use” light/buzzers at entrances. Access to office phone system/intercoms. Gas heated. (2) Dressing Rooms and Camera Department is attached. Air-conditioned.

Stage B is a 36’x36’ space and currently houses Edgewood’s Prop Storage and Scenery Dock. Stage B also includes the Prop Workshop and, on the second floor, Wardrobe Storage. All in-house productions may make use of this space on a scheduled basis including use of existing set flats, props, and wardrobe. (A great cost saver for numerous productions in the past!) 1600 Amp Service. Outfitted with Studio “In-Use” light/buzzers at entrances. Access to office phone system/intercoms. Attached to New England Light & Grip and (2) restrooms with Makeup Station. Gas heated. Max height at ceiling peak is 24’.

Stage C is a 92’x 48’ space with open ceiling construction allowing larger set pieces to be constructed. Attached dressing room/restroom facilities. This stage features an energy-efficient Radiant Gas Heating system that cuts costs substantially by heating objects and people - not the air. 1600 Amp Service. Max height at ceiling peak is 24’. Connected by double doorway to Stage B.

"the Howe Backlot” features a unique configuration of exterior structures at Howe Center in which three angles of view are filled with building exteriors. There is also a small streambed and grassy area bordered with trees for more rural shots. These spaces have been filmed as period streets, alleyways, a used car dealership, New York City exteriors, industrial exteriors, a dystopic future, as a back lot for shooting large scale miniatures, and even as New Jersey! The ability to have full access to these spaces without having to close and clear a location has made it an easy choice for many Location Managers and a cover set for many Line Producers and Assistant Directors. As there are many diverse types of businesses, structures, and architecture in Howe Center there are many interior locations to be found within the complex as well.

Himolene is a large clear span structure, divided into three sections (one removable) with very high ceilings and cement floors. The building is off-site from Edgewood, but only a few minutes drive away. If your production requires a very large, clear span space, this is it. Multiple 1600 Amp Panels are available. (3) Bathrooms are attached to the stage.

All Edgewood stages are connected with work doorways. A total of 3200 Amps are available. Distro can be rented as needed and sub panels are distributed throughout the stages.

A speed rail lighting grid can be suspended anywhere on the stages.

If more actor space is needed, there is room for makeup/wardrobe & cast trailers can be parked directly adjacent to the stages.

Also included is a prop shop (now on stage B) and L&G staging and set area. Plenty of free parking is available in any of the three large parking lots in Howe Center. Please note that stages A, B & C do not have clear span roofs, so accommodation for support beams in set design may be required. (This can be mitigated by use of Stage D or Himolene, noted above.) As mentioned elsewhere in this brochure, we often have many generic props, wardrobe, standing set pieces and set flats available. Let us know what you need.

The Franklin Conference Center, directly across from our stages is one of the excellent choices available for crew meals. They are experienced in providing high-quality, low-cost cinema cuisine. Craft service platters; office lunches, special dietary needs, as well as low-cost, high volume (and very tasty!) crew meals are their specialty. They have served numerous productions over the years and are very experienced at keeping crews with full, happy bellies! Plus, your cast and crew never have to leave the Howe Center complex! (Time saver! - They are only 67ft. away from the stages.) There are also many other helpful business within the Howe Center that you will find to compliment your productions. Howe Center and the Edgewood facility were constructed to meet ADA standards so, of course are entirely handicapped-accessible.
